Post-Operative Rehabilitation for Knee, Hip & Shoulder Replacements

Recover Stronger with True Balance Rehabilitation in Kitchener, Ontario

If you’ve recently had or are preparing for a knee, hip, or shoulder replacement, one of the most important steps in your recovery is physiotherapy. Surgery is just the beginning and proper pre or post-operative rehabilitation helps rebuild strength, improve confidence with movement, and ultimately return to the activities you love.

At True Balance Rehabilitation in Kitchener, we help patients across the Waterloo Region recover safely and confidently after joint replacement surgery. Below, we’ll answer the most common questions people ask us about recovery and share what you can expect during rehab.

Common Questions About Recovery After Joint Replacement

When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?

Rehabilitation typically starts within the first few days after surgery. Early movement helps reduce joint stiffness, swelling, and complications. When you begin rehabilitation will always be guided by your surgeon.

  • Knee replacement: physiotherapy often begins within a few days after surgery however, in many cases you will be sent home with initial exercises to begin doing
  • Hip replacement: gentle at home exercises are initiated in the first few days and physiotherapy usually starts after 1-2 weeks
  • Shoulder replacement: treatment typically begins after around 4 weeks with gentle passive range of motion to maintain mobility while protecting the replacement.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies, but most people see major progress within 6 to 12 weeks, with continued gains for up to a year. Everyone heals at their own pace your therapist will tailor your program to your comfort and goals.

Why is physiotherapy so important after surgery?

Physiotherapy helps you:

    • Regain flexibility and movement
    • Strengthen the muscles that support your new joint
    • Improve walking, balance, and coordination
    • Reduce pain and swelling
    • Prevent stiffness or complications

Without guided rehab, recovery can be slower and less complete which is why following a structured program makes a big difference!

“Will I Ever Regain Full Movement?”

That’s one of the most common questions we hear. Most people regain the movement and strength they need for everyday life. Every recovery timeline is different, but with consistent physiotherapy many continue to improve over time.

What You Can Do to Support Your Recovery

  1. Stay consistent with your home exercises — daily effort makes a big difference
  2. Communicate with your therapist about pain or challenges
  3. Follow your surgeon’s guidelines to protect your new joint
  4. Keep moving safely — walking and light activity boost healing
  5. Be patient — recovery is gradual, but progress adds up quickly
